Type Locality and Naming

It was named by Wang Yuelun as Tieyegou Red Sandstone Series in 1948. The naming section is located on the North Hills of Tieye Gully (eastern wing of the Mawangmiao Syncline) 2 km south of Agan Township, Gaolan County (ca. 36.3N, 103.9E), Gansu Province.

Synonym: (铁冶沟组); Tiehyehkou Fm


Lithology and Thickness

Its lower part is composed mainly of grey-green and purple clayey shales, intercalated with sandstone, while its upper part is composed of red sandstone, conglomerate and clay beds, with a thickness of 100-150 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It overlies conformably the Yaojie Fm (Aganzhan Fm).

Upper contact

Implied by regional situation that the next younger unit is the Xiangtang Fm.

Regional extent

It is distributed in the area of Agan Township, Lanzhou City.
